其實並不是台灣的水比較髒，因為台灣的自來水也都有符合「飲用水水質標準」，也就是自來水其實皆可生飲。但為何連台灣自來水公司也不建議直接生飲自來水呢？台灣自來水公司表示：
「供水皆經取得環保署認證之各區處檢驗室定期及不定期檢驗，及環保單位不定期抽驗，均符合『飲用水水質標準』，也就是說所有的自來水皆可生飲，但因國內時有開挖馬路挖斷管線，修理管線之情形，且用戶多裝有蓄水池或水塔，如沒有定期清洗，恐有被污染之虞，故本公司並不鼓勵生飲。」
